Blistering World Cup has Spectators in Awe

The hype has been immortal, but after the first two weeks of the prestigious ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, spectators from every corner of the world are in absolute awe.

We have already seen some spectacular things in this World Cup, going from England’s woefulness to Chris Gayle’s monumentus double century, to New Zealand’s destructive performances.

Just over a week ago, New Zealand demolished England, winnign by 8 wickets with over 35 overs remaining, after Tim Southee skittled England for 123, taking a spectacular 7-33.

This was then followed up by the fastest ever 50 in a World Cup from prodigious, explosive and rampant batsman Brendon McCullum, who smashed 70-odd from only 25 deliveries to take New Zealand home.

The India v Pakistan derby a couple of weeks ago seemed to be a big hit and a half, with massive crowds flocking to Adelaide Oval to see Virat Kohli blast a century to take India through to a comfortable win.

But then, last Saturday, we say all of 86,000 people rally to the Melbourne Cricket Ground to see India take out South Africa this time. The atmosphere was sensational, which highlighted the magnitude of the crowds at this World Cup.

Just a couple of days ago, massive West Indian Chris Gayle whacked the fastest ever double hundred in World Cup history, against the Zimbabweans. He finished with a spectacular 215 from 138 balls with a whopping 16 sixes, joined by 135* from Marlon Samuels, which completed a spectacular, gargantuan, amazing, wait for it, 372 run partnership, the highest ever in ODIS that saw the West Indies through to 372-2, after losing Chris Gayle on the last ball of the match.

We also saw Afghanistan notch their first World Cup victory, defeating Scotland, after the Scots had just defeated the West Indies.

While this has been an absolute run-fest, yesterday just added to the festivities. AB de Villiers smashed the fastest ever 150 in ODI history, from a tiddling 64 balls. He now holds the record for the fastest ever 50, 100 and 150, all against the West Indies!

The West Indies were then on the wrong side of a circus, chasing down a massive 408. Imran Tahir took five wickets, to skittle them for 151, giving South Africa a 257 run win.

Australia have played only one game this World Cup, against England first up, after Cyclone Marcia washed out their contest with Bangladesh last Saturday.

Today, it all comes down to this. The two form teams of the comp, both in spectacular nick, fighting in the ultimate battle at Eden Park. It is: Australia v New Zealand. Friends become foes, and families (such as mine) become divided. The dinner table will become silent, and secret grudges will be held.

At 2:30 pm New Zealand time, the wait will be over. Michael Clarke’s awaited return has come, against possibly the most deadly side right now.

So, buckle up, because no passenger will be left behind. Can you hear it? The crowds are chanting, drums banging, awaiting the massive moment…
